Arthritis Physiotherapy
Moving Better with Less Pain
Arthritis doesn't mean you have to stop moving. In fact, the right movement is the best medicine. Physiotherapy helps manage pain, improve joint flexibility, and strengthen muscles to support your joints.
Managing Arthritis
There are over 100 types of arthritis, but Osteoarthritis (wear and tear) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (inflammatory) are the most common. While there is no cure, physiotherapy is proven to reduce symptoms and delay the need for joint replacement surgery.
How Physio Helps
- Strengthening: Strong muscles act as shock absorbers, taking pressure off the painful joint.
- Range of Motion: Gentle movements prevent joints from "freezing" up.
- Pain Management: Using modalities like IFT, Ultrasound, and heat/cold therapy.
- Assistive Devices: Advice on using canes, braces, or shoe inserts to unload the joint.
Clinical Home Care for Arthritis
Morning Warm-Up
Joints are stiffest in the morning. Use a warm towel or take a warm shower immediately after waking up to loosen them before moving.
Low-Impact Activity
Walking, cycling, and swimming are excellent. Avoid high-impact jumping or running on hard surfaces if it causes pain.
Weight Control
Losing even a small amount of weight drastically reduces the load on weight-bearing joints like hips and knees.
Pacing
Balance activity with rest. Do heavy chores in small chunks rather than all at once to avoid flare-ups.
